Eden Gate

I am proud to take on the role of patron for Newport charity Eden Gate.

For the past two years, Eden Gate has delivered an award-winning programme giving guests the tools and confidence they need for accessing healthcare and independent living, guided by the principle of “homeless not helpless”.

It is a Christian charity helping people of all faiths and none, who may be experiencing homelessness, living in temporary accommodation or at risk of losing their home.

I will continue to champion their innovative work as they begin the next phase of their mission – the Eden Gate Skills Training Centre, which will provide accredited training for construction and energy work, helping guests break out of the homelessness cycle and build sustainable futures of their own.

Pitch fees

In my regular meetings with the Caerphilly Council leadership, I have raised the issue of pitch fee increases for sport clubs.

Council leader Sean Morgan has acknowledged the feedback from grassroots clubs and agreed to pause the changes while they explore alternative options.

I am encouraging all rugby clubs in Islwyn to write to the council, set out their concerns, and I am confident a solution can be found that presents a sustainable price increase for our clubs in line with fees in other areas.

Save the Six Bells

I recently returned to the Six Bells in Peterstone – this time with Newport Council leader, Dimitri Batrouni.

The building has fallen into a sorry state since it closed in 2018 and we looked at some of the issues concerning access and safety.

Residents have a plan to revitalise the Six Bells as a place to eat and drink, buy local produce and learn more about the Gwent Levels. It would give this historic building a chance to fulfil its potential, not just as a pub but as a real community hub.

We had a productive discussion about factors like road condition, bus services and the proximity of the Wales Coast Path, which could affect the success of this project and the everyday lives of residents in Peterstone.

I was pleased to hear the campaign’s application to the Welsh Government’s Community Facilities Programme Fund has progressed, which could provide an additional £300,000, after I wrote in support.

Safran Seats

Last month I visited Safran Seats GB which manufactures first and business-class seats for dozens of international airlines including British Airways, Delta and Etihad Airways to name just a few.

I was amazed to learn these seats are tested to withstand up to 16G of force and hear more about the state-of-the-art audio technology made in Wales for Japan Airlines.

The company is planning to invest millions of pounds in Newport over the coming years, boosting its manufacturing and logistics capacity and bringing around 100 new jobs to Imperial Park.

Rothbury House

On 1 May, I attended the official opening of Rothbury House sexual violence support centre.

The Welsh charity, New Pathways, has done a brilliant job at transforming the building into a space that feels comfortable and safe, and there are dedicated areas and specialist staff to help young survivors.

We all have a part to play in gripping these issues, so I was glad to be alongside Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary Jane Hutt, Newport Council cabinet member Laura Lacey, and Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd on this occasion.

I would like to thank New Pathways for an insightful tour of the House and, as I said in Parliament, I pay tribute to all of the vital work that is done by volunteers and staff.

Victory in Europe

On the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe, we remember those who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy today. We remember their sacrifice, their values, and what they fought for.

It was a privilege to mark the occasion with a flag-raising ceremony at Newport Civic Centre and a brilliant VE Day party at Bethesda Baptist Church. I welcome the UK Government’s announcement of a new veteran support system, called VALOUR, to make it easier for our heroes to access essential care and support.
