On the sixth anniversary of my first election to Parliament, I had the honour of opening our beautiful new constituency office in Newbridge.

Cutting the red ribbon besides me were Don Touhig and Sam Flynn, representing both parts of the constituency, each having played an historic part in the Labour movement, celebrating the union of Newport West and Islwyn.

Last month, I met with flooding experts and engineers at Crumlin Rugby Club to discuss the damage done to the clubhouse during Storm Bert and take a closer look at the issues on the ground.

We walked to the Kay Field and examined the issues around the River Ebbw and North Road. We were joined by a surface drainage expert from Network Rail who inspected the land around the railway and they will be returning later this month.

Since the meeting, we have received good news on a number of fronts. Caerphilly Council has allocated £38k to reducing flood risk to properties on North Road and committed to working with Crumlin Rugby Club and others to remedy the issues we identified.

Following a record investment into flood protection from the Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales is starting a new hydraulic modelling review of the River Ebbw which will provide a fundamental understanding of where, and how, river flooding takes place, and what defences could be implemented.

Last month I joined the Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies at Vishay’s Newport plant which is the biggest semiconductor plant in the country.

We welcomed the company’s £250 million investment into the Newport plant which will directly support more than 500 jobs and the production of advanced silicon carbide which is an important component of electric vehicles.

In Parliament, I opened a debate on the persecution of Christians across the world. As an officer of the cross-party Freedom of Religion or Belief group, I have heard harrowing tales of violence and even people losing their lives simply because of their faith.

Where we find freedom of belief under attack, other freedoms are also threatened. I spoke about the struggle of Christian women who, with horrors such as house arrest and forced marriage, are being persecuted twice: for their faith and their gender.
